Viola Davis’s new Paramount+ thriller has added two formidable names. Paramount announced on 29 October that Alfred Molina and Selton Mello have joined the cast of Ascent, the character-driven thriller starring Davis, who will also executive-produce the series, The Futon Critic reported, carrying the Paramount announcement. Deadline also reported the casting.

The new arrivals

Molina will play Sebastian, the formidable head of Ascent Ventures, who has begun to consider which of his top agents might succeed him, according to the announcement. Mello will play Leonardo, described as a charismatic business titan with a long and complicated history with Ascent Ventures. The two roles sit at the centre of the power struggles the series promises to explore: who controls the firm, who can be trusted, and what loyalty costs when the stakes are high.

Mello is known internationally for I’m Still Here and Anaconda, The Futon Critic noted. Molina recently voiced Marcellus the octopus in the Emmy-winning Remarkably Bright Creatures, MEAWW reported, and earned Emmy nominations for The Normal Heart and Feud: Bette and Joan. On stage, he earned Tony nominations for Art, Fiddler on the Roof and Red, according to the same report.

A fixer at the centre

Ascent is set in what Paramount describes as the dangerous world of global corporate crisis and damage control. Davis will play Catriona, an elite corporate fixer who must weaponise the ruthless skills that have made her indispensable to billion-dollar clients when her estranged daughter is in danger, The Futon Critic reported. The premise puts a personal emergency inside a professional world built on secrets, leverage and carefully managed reputations.

The new casting joins two previously announced names. Sam Heughan will play Conal, one of Ascent Ventures’ top agents, and Amy Madigan will play Rachel, a former executive at the firm and Catriona’s lifelong mentor, according to the announcement. Together, the ensemble sketches a workplace where mentorship, ambition and rivalry are closely entangled.

The team behind it

The series is created by John Logan, the three-time Oscar nominee behind Skyfall, Gladiator and Penny Dreadful, who will serve as showrunner and executive producer, The Futon Critic reported. Michael Aguilar will also executive-produce, alongside Davis and Julius Tennon for their JuVee Productions banner. Paramount Television Studios is producing the series, which will premiere globally exclusively on Paramount+, with production slated to begin in Los Angeles in 2027. No premiere date has been announced.

When the series was first announced, Davis said she was “overwhelmingly excited about this journey with the great John Logan,” Variety reported, via the Times of India.
