Barbara Barrie, the Oscar-nominated actress known for Breaking Away, Barney Miller and the original Broadway cast of Company, has died at the age of 95, People reported, citing The New York Times.

Barrie died on Wednesday, 28 October at her home in Manhattan following a terminal cancer diagnosis, People reported. Her daughter, Jane Harnick, told The New York Times that her mother’s death was medically assisted, the outlet reported. Just Jared also reported that Harnick confirmed the news to The New York Times, and that the cancer diagnosis came 12 years after Barrie had previously been diagnosed with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, a degenerative lung disease.

A career of more than six decades

Barrie was born Barbara Ann Berman in Chicago on 23 May 1931 and grew up in Corpus Christi, Texas, Broadway.com reported. She studied journalism at Del Mar College before turning to acting, People reported, and studied drama at the University of Texas, graduating in 1952, before moving to New York, Broadway.com reported.

She made her Broadway debut in the 1955 comedy The Wooden Dish, Broadway.com reported. Her stage career reached a landmark when she created the role of Sarah in the original Broadway production of Stephen Sondheim’s Company, earning a Tony nomination for Best Featured Actress in a Musical in 1971, the outlet reported. She returned to Broadway for the final time in 2017, playing Helene Berman in Joshua Harmon’s Significant Other, Broadway.com reported.

On screen, Barrie won the Best Actress award at the Cannes Film Festival for One Potato, Two Potato in 1964, BroadwayWorld reported. She received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress for her work in 1979’s Breaking Away, People reported, and on television she starred as the wife of the title character in Barney Miller and appeared in Suddenly Susan, the outlet reported. Her later television work included guest appearances on Nurse Jackie in 2010 and Enlightened in 2011, Just Jared reported.

Remembered

Playbill reported that news of her death was confirmed to The New York Times by Harnick, who said Barrie’s death was chosen and medically assisted following the diagnosis. Barrie is survived by her two children, whom she shared with her late husband, Jay Harnick, and by three grandchildren, Just Jared reported.

Her career spanned more than six decades across stage, film and television, Broadway.com reported — from a Broadway debut in the 1950s to an Oscar nomination, a Tony nomination and a final stage appearance in her eighties.
