Charli XCX Joins Martin Scorsese's Next Film in Secret Cameo Role

Pop star Charli XCX is heading from the concert stage to a Martin Scorsese set. According to a Variety report, she has filmed a cameo in the director's upcoming feature, What Happens at Night, joining a cast led by Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence.

The collaboration is not quite as out of the blue as it first sounds. Scorsese already appeared in the visual world of Charli's latest album, Music, Fashion, Film, alongside John Cale and Marc Jacobs, with the three figures standing in for the three art forms named in its title. What began as a playful visual link has now become a real screen credit.

The film itself is described as a gothic psychological drama, produced by Apple and StudioCanal. It follows an American married couple who travel to a small European town to adopt a baby, only to find that the harder they struggle to claim their child, the less they seem to know about themselves. Details of Charli's part are being kept under wraps, and the production has not said how large the role is.

She joins a heavyweight ensemble that also includes Mads Mikkelsen, Patricia Clarkson and Jared Harris. For a film built around DiCaprio and Lawrence, adding one of pop's most unpredictable figures is exactly the kind of casting choice that turns a project into a talking point long before any trailer arrives.

The move also fits the second act Charli has been building in cinema. She has appeared in seven films over the past two years, including The Moment, a mockumentary directed by her frequent collaborator Aidan Zamiri that satirises the commercial whirlwind around her Brat era. The Scorsese cameo now places that screen career on its biggest stage yet.

Away from film, Charli is wrapping up the United States leg of her tour for the new record, with the final show of the leg in Las Vegas on Friday before she heads to Europe in February. Whether her Scorsese appearance lasts seconds or steals a scene, it is already one of the most unexpected casting stories of the year.
