Este Haim told PEOPLE she once wrote in her diary asking when she could be in a Marvel movie — and has now made her first voice-acting appearance as the villain Hallow’s Eve in Marvel’s Spidey and the Avengers: Halloween Team-Up!

A diary wish from years ago

PEOPLE reported that Haim, 40, spoke about the role in a new interview, recalling a note she wrote to herself long before the part arrived. “I mean, I wrote in my diary, ‘Dear Diary, when can I be in a Marvel movie?’,” she told PEOPLE. “This is probably 13 years ago. I was like, ‘When is this going to happen?’ ... And then the universe answered and gave me Hallow’s Eve.”

Haim rose to fame more than a decade ago with her sisters Danielle and Alana in the band HAIM, PEOPLE reported, and has since built credits as an actress, composer and music supervisor. The special is her first voice-acting role.

A villain’s first time on screen

Hallow’s Eve had previously existed only in comic books, PEOPLE reported, and the Disney Jr. special gives the character her first-ever onscreen appearance. D23, Disney’s official fan club site, confirmed the casting, describing Haim and Fall Out Boy’s Patrick Stump as Grammy Award-nominated musicians voicing the special’s villains.

The special follows Spidey and the Avengers as they plan a Halloween celebration, PEOPLE reported, until Hallow’s Eve and Jack O’Lantern, voiced by Stump, try to spoil the occasion with magical tricks. D23 described the pair as playing tricks on trick-or-treaters.

Why she loved playing the villain

Haim told PEOPLE that stepping into a villain’s shoes felt unfamiliar, but welcome. “It’s so out of my comfort zone,” she said, according to PEOPLE. “But I did grow up loving the villains more than the Disney princesses.”

Her favourite example, she said, was Ursula from The Little Mermaid. “I love them also, don’t get me wrong ... but Ursula had the more fun song, ‘Poor Unfortunate Souls’,” she told PEOPLE.

ABC Audio reported that Haim grew up watching X-Men and Superman alongside Disney films, and had long wanted to try animation: “I just put it in the universe,” she said.

Music at the heart of it

D23 reported that Stump serves as composer and songwriter on Marvel’s Spidey and his Amazing Friends and wrote two new songs for the special, including the “Hallows’ Eve Theme.” ABC Audio reported that Haim, described as a five-time Grammy nominee, performs the song with Stump.

ABC Audio also reported that the special is available to watch now, as part of a series it described as Marvel’s most-watched television series on Disney+.
