HBO has cast the parents at the heart of Harry Potter’s story — and a Weasley brother the original films never put on screen. Hannah Chinn will play Lily Potter, Jasper Talbot will play James Potter and Harry Gilby will play Charlie Weasley, HBO announced on Tuesday, 27 October 2026, People, TheWrap and Variety reported.

Three new faces for familiar names

The announcement arrived two months before the new series begins. The first season, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, premieres on HBO and HBO Max on Christmas Day, 25 December 2026, People reported, following the first book in J.K. Rowling’s series with Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley.

Chinn is known for The Conjuring: Last Rites, People reported, and was described by TheWrap as a Domina actress. Talbot previously featured in Broadchurch, People reported. Gilby has featured in My Fault: London and Boarders, People reported, and TheWrap described him as best known for The Last Kingdom and Boarders.

Lily and James Potter are killed at the start of Philosopher’s Stone, TheWrap reported, yet they remain central to Harry’s journey at Hogwarts — most notably, TheWrap noted, when Harry spots them in the Mirror of Erised. The series is being developed as a faithful adaptation of Rowling’s books, with each season expected to cover one novel, the Tribune reported, citing Variety.

A Weasley the films never showed

Charlie Weasley may be the most intriguing of the three castings. He is the second-eldest Weasley brother and works with dragons in Romania in the books, Parade reported. Readers meet him across the series, but film audiences never saw him played by an actor in a scene: Parade reported that he appeared only in a Weasley family photograph in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban and was never portrayed on screen in the original eight films.

SlashFilm reported that his inclusion could give audiences a character they had previously only read about, and a chance to correct what it called a narrative gap in the films. For book readers, Charlie’s arrival is a sign of how much more of Rowling’s world the television format can hold.

A Christmas Day premiere

The new cast joins an ensemble that already includes John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape and Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid, TheWrap reported. Francesca Gardiner serves as writer and executive producer, the Tribune reported, with Mark Mylod executive producing and directing multiple episodes.

For fans who grew up with the films, the message is clear: familiar names, new faces — and room for characters the films left in the margins.
