Johnny Depp Joins Aerosmith on Guitar as Band Makes Triumphant Hollywood Bowl Comeback

Aerosmith returned to the concert stage on Thursday, 29 October, at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles, in a night that ended with one of the most talked-about surprise appearances of the year. Consequence reported that the show, billed as “California, Dream On: Aerosmith & Friends,” was the band’s first concert in three years.
Depp’s surprise guitar cameo
Johnny Depp stepped out during the band’s closing run of songs to play guitar alongside Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry on “Train Kept A-Rollin’,” USA Today reported. Perry introduced Depp, who was wearing blue-tinted sunglasses, while frontman Steven Tyler laughingly told the crowd the star was “here, in living color.”
Depp let his guitar do the talking during his one song, USA Today reported, saluting the audience as he walked offstage before “Walk This Way.” Consequence reported that Grohl played drums on the first five songs, with Depp joining on guitar for “Train Kept A-Rollin’,” before Kramer and touring drummer John Douglas both played on the finale.
The pairing was no accident of casting: Depp has played alongside Perry in the supergroup Hollywood Vampires since 2012.
A night built around friends
The evening was introduced by Liv Tyler, Steven Tyler’s daughter, and Alicia Silverstone, who starred together in Aerosmith’s 1994 “Crazy” music video. USA Today reported that the pair walked onstage after the video played on the Bowl’s giant screens.
Other guests filled the night with Aerosmith songs of their own. Consequence reported that Guns N’ Roses played three Aerosmith songs before closing with “Welcome to the Jungle” and “Paradise City,” while the Black Crowes, Heart, Billy Idol, Sammy Hagar and Eric Church also performed.
Why the comeback mattered
Aerosmith had appeared to reach the end of the road. USA Today reported that the band cancelled its Peace Out farewell tour in August 2024 after Tyler suffered a fractured larynx and vocal cord damage during a September 2023 concert, an injury that forced the band to retire from touring.
On Thursday, Tyler showed few signs of holding back. USA Today reported that the 78-year-old sprinted around the stage in a gold outfit, his voice sometimes raspier than usual but showing no obvious signs of vocal distress as the band played “Toys in the Attic,” “Back in the Saddle,” “Sweet Emotion” and “Dream On.” Tyler closed the night by embracing Kramer, who made an emotional return after more than six years away from the band.
There was no encore and no all-star group finale, USA Today reported. A second “California, Dream On” night is scheduled at the Hollywood Bowl on Sunday, 1 November.
