Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were already out of the United Kingdom on a half-term family holiday with their children when news about her father broke, according to multiple royal sources cited by Page Six on 28 October.

Royal journalist Andrea Caamano told Page Six: “I wouldn’t describe Meghan as having fled the UK following the allegations against her father.” Caamano said the news broke while Meghan was already out of the country with her family for the October half-term holidays, adding that some schools have a two-week break, so “the timing appears to be coincidental rather than a deliberate decision to escape the headlines”. Royal commentator Kinsey Schofield agreed, telling Page Six that schools across Britain are currently on their October half-term break.

A return expected by the end of the week

Page Six reported that the Sussexes and their children, Prince Archie, 7, and Princess Lilibet, 5, had travelled overseas to an unknown location for the break. Caamano said she expected the family to return towards the end of the week, in time for school to resume, EntertainmentNow reported.

PEOPLE reported that the couple are receiving updates while on holiday with their children and close family and friends. A friend told PEOPLE: “It’s been really difficult. She’s really cut up,” adding that there was also “a slight sense of relief that this is all coming out” and hope that “a proper investigation can take place”.

Stepping back from social media

Caamano also told Page Six that Harry and Meghan have a team managing and publishing content on their social media accounts, allowing them to take a step back for the sake of their mental health, NewsBytes reported. Caamano said she expected Meghan to resume social media activity soon, EntertainmentNow reported.

The break coincides with a period in which the couple were already expected to keep a low profile. InStyle reported, citing The Times, that Harry and Meghan have no public engagements planned while King Charles is on a nine-day tour of the Caribbean, and that a source said Harry does not “set out” to overshadow the King or Prince William.

The reports published last week made allegations against Meghan’s estranged father, Thomas Markle Sr., 82, concerning explicit images involving children, which he has denied, PEOPLE and InStyle reported.
