Prince William has made a surprise appearance on The Graham Norton Show, taking a seat on its famous red sofa for a special edition devoted to his Earthshot Prize — in what is being reported as a royal first for the long-running BBC chat show. The episode airs on BBC One on Friday, October 23 at 10:40pm UK time, Radio Times and OK! reported.

The surprise appearance

Kensington Palace announced the episode early Friday through a post on the official Prince and Princess of Wales and Earthshot Prize Instagram accounts, confirming that the special Earthshot edition would air at 10:40pm, royal commentator Charlie Proctor noted in Royal Central's coverage. The recording itself had already taken place the previous evening, when the unsuspecting studio audience gasped as Graham Norton introduced the Prince of Wales mid-show, Hello! magazine reported.

The Prince joined a sofa of celebrity guests, all connected to his environmental initiative: Oscar winner Cate Blanchett, who sits on the Earthshot Prize council; Hannah Waddingham, who hosted the 2023 Earthshot Prize awards in Singapore; and Robert Irwin, a global ambassador for the prize, Radio Times reported. Jorja Smith performed her current single, "Dancing", during the episode.

What he talked about

The conversation centered on why William created the environmental prize and how it turns promising ideas into real-world change, Radio Times reported. He said he wanted to push back against the "negativity and doom" that dominated environmental coverage: "For many years I was hearing stories about environment issues and one thing that struck me was the negativity and doom which got me down. I thought we could do something more powerful and more optimistic. It's all about getting excited."

The red sofa also gave the future king room to show a more relaxed side, Hello! noted. He spoke about his lifelong support for Aston Villa and his love for the films of Christopher Nolan, calling The Dark Knight series "psychologically dark and deep". He also revealed that the Wales household are devoted viewers of Celebrity Traitors: "I love it, the family love it. Charlotte and Louis are obsessed with it. It's really good telly."

The Earthshot countdown

The special episode forms part of the official countdown to this year's Earthshot Prize awards ceremony, which will be held in Mumbai in November, with five winners each receiving £1 million in prize funding, OK! reported. The prize, which William founded in 2020 and inspired by John F. Kennedy's Moonshot project, is now at the midpoint of its ten-year mission to find and scale solutions to the planet's most urgent challenges.

Royal Central noted that the appearance continues a deliberate effort to carry Earthshot's message beyond formal royal engagements and into familiar entertainment formats — reaching viewers who might not follow environmental conferences or royal speeches.
