Tatum O’Neal Steps Out With Family in Rare Los Angeles Appearance After Stroke Recovery

Tatum O’Neal made a rare public appearance in Los Angeles on Saturday, walking with the help of a cane alongside her daughter, Emily McEnroe, and her son-in-law, Tim Massarelli, Page Six reported. Photographs obtained by the outlet showed the 62-year-old Oscar winner in good spirits as she chatted with the family members walking beside her.
A family outing in Los Angeles
O’Neal wore a full-length black dress with a navy blue suit jacket, a long necklace, black loafers and glasses, Page Six reported. She was photographed holding Massarelli’s hand for support as she walked with the cane, the outlet reported.
The outing came days after O’Neal shared a selfie on Instagram, smiling in front of what appeared to be family photographs, Page Six reported. She captioned the image with a single word, “Hope,” followed by a red heart emoji, the outlet reported.
Six years of recovery
In 2023, O’Neal revealed that an overdose in 2020 involving a combination of pain medication, opiates and morphine led to a six-week coma and a near-fatal stroke, Page Six reported, citing her interview with People.
“I almost died,” O’Neal told People, according to Page Six, describing herself as having been “an addict my whole life, pretty much on and off, for the past 30 to 40 years.”
Her son Kevin McEnroe, 40, told People he had worried she would not survive, Page Six reported. “She also had a cardiac arrest and a number of seizures,” Kevin said, according to the outlet. “There were times we didn’t think she was going to survive.”
Following the incident, O’Neal worked in rehabilitation facilities to regain strength and memory and to relearn reading and writing, Page Six reported. She was subsequently diagnosed with aphasia, the outlet reported. O’Neal told People she had been prescribed the medication for rheumatoid arthritis and back and neck pain, and that a friend found her at her home in Century City, Los Angeles, and took her to hospital, Page Six reported.
From Paper Moon to the present
O’Neal rose to fame starring alongside her father, Ryan O’Neal, in 1973’s Paper Moon, Page Six reported. She won the Academy Award in 1974 at the age of 10, becoming the youngest person to win a competitive Oscar, a record the outlet said she still holds.
Kevin told People his mother had become very isolated during the pandemic, Page Six reported, and he described her recovery as a “miracle.” “This last chapter, where she wants to live, wants to get sober, wants to learn, I think it’s a miracle,” he said. “I’ve never been more proud to be her son.”
