Tom Cruise Makes Rare Baseball Appearance as Stars Watch World Series Game 3

Tom Cruise made a rare appearance at a baseball game on Monday night, joining Dick Vitale and Yung Gravy in the crowd at Tropicana Field as the Milwaukee Brewers demolished the Tampa Bay Rays 10-1 in Game 3 of the World Series.

A rare night at the ballpark

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported that Cruise, Vitale and Yung Gravy watched on as Milwaukee took a commanding 3-0 lead in the best-of-seven series in St. Petersburg, Florida. For Cruise, the newspaper noted, it was a return to the stands after a long absence: he attended Game 2 of the National League Division Series between the San Francisco Giants and the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2021, but had not been sighted at a baseball game since.

Vitale, the home-team loyalist

Unlike Cruise, Vitale needed no introduction to the home crowd. The 87-year-old college basketball analyst is a well-documented Rays fan, the Journal Sentinel reported, and has held season tickets since the franchise began play in 1998. He was, in other words, exactly where Rays supporters would expect to find him on a World Series night.

Vitale has said he also plans to attend Games 4 and 5, if the latter is played, according to the Journal Sentinel.

Yung Gravy and a stadium turned Brewers territory

Rapper and musician Yung Gravy, whose real name is Matt Hauri, was also in attendance, the Journal Sentinel reported, wearing a Tampa Bay Lightning jersey. His Tampa Bay ties run through hockey rather than baseball: his song “Gravy Train” became a locker-room good-luck charm for the Lightning during their 2020-21 Stanley Cup run. Fans might have been surprised to see him in the Rays stands, the newspaper added, since he attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

The famous faces were watching a crowd story as much as a game. Fox Sports reported that Brewers fans travelled to St. Petersburg in such numbers that the stadium felt like an extension of Milwaukee, with host Kevin Burkhardt telling viewers he had never seen anything like it. Former Yankees star Derek Jeter said he was surprised by the size of the Brewers crowd, while Alex Rodriguez summed it up in four words, according to Fox Sports: “It’s a Milwaukee Brewer takeover.”

On the field, Milwaukee scored eight runs in the fifth inning on the way to the 10-1 win, Fox Sports reported. The celebrity crowd, like the home crowd, watched a series that now looks firmly in the Brewers’ hands — with Game 4 to come on Tuesday night at 8 p.m. ET.
